In Case You Missed It: A Few Takeaways From USPA 2014

Last month, AssetWorks attended the University Surplus Property Association (USPA) Conference at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado. With over 50 attendees from Colleges / Universities across the country and more than a dozen sessions, the information exchange was abundant. In case you missed it, here are a few takeaways from the conference:

The Benefits of Improving your Relationship with your Recycling Department

  • Surplus and recycling departments are generally working towards the same goals – unfortunately, not always in the same direction.
  • Some benefits of aligning the two departments may include: shared presence at events, online, and through promotions; consolidated waste streams; combined pickups and deliveries; and shared labor cost
  • Oregon State University saw a reduction in expenses & labor as a result of their combined efforts.

Transitioning to a Surplus Management Software Solution

  • A few benefits of implementing a surplus management software system may include: increased reuse of surplus materials, streamlined accounting reconciliation, and increased accountability/transparency
  • Customization is possible if your department or a particular campus has unique needs

National Association of Information Destruction (NAID)

  • NAID is the international trade association for companies providing information destruction services. Their mission is to promote the information destruction industry and the standards and ethics of member companies.
  • Sensitive media include: paper, hard drives, external media, fax rollers, etc.
  • Temple University is currently navigating NAID Certification for a University

Other presentation topics included: How to Write a Sustainable E-waste Policy, An Overview of Your Operation- A Presentation to University Administration, Useful Metrics, Capital Asset Tracking, Pricing Guidelines, and tours of Colorado State’s Surplus facility, solar plant, and compost operation as well as the New Belgium Brewery.
