How to Select Surplus Management Software

You’ve decided that software will help your operations run more smoothly. You’ve done your research and now have a few options to choose from. How do you select surplus management software that’s right for you and your team?

Purchasing a software solution is not simply a transaction but rather the start of long-term relationship with your vendor. Below are a few things we think you should consider before deciding which solution (and relationship) is best for you.

Look Beyond the Sales Team

By the time you’re ready to make your purchase decision, you’ve probably had several conversations with someone from the sales team but what do you know about the company’s development and support teams? For example, where is the support team located? What are their hours? If a unique need arises, can the development team create a custom solution for you? Who will you be working with during implementation, and does that change after “go live”? Make sure you have a clear idea of what your relationship will be with the entire time and evaluate whether those are individuals you can see you and your team working with for the entire term of your contract. In the case of surplus management software, this can be two, four or even six years!

Innovation as a Priority

Does the company stay up-to-date with current industry trends? Do they continue to come up with ideas for new products and to enhance their current products? If this is a solution you expect to be using for years to come, you want to make sure the company you’re working with plans to advance their technology too. Often times this information is very accesible during the sales process, but its worth asking how they communicate these updates with customers versus prospects. Are release notes published? How often? Selecting surplus management software isn’t a one-time process, changes are you will be evaluating the solution at least a few times throughout your contract and certainly when its up for renewal. You’ll want to make sure you’re getting all the information along the way.

Additional Modules and Solutions

Right now, you may be looking for a solution to streamline the online auction process or advertise surplus inventory but eventually, you might have other needs. Does your potential vendor have a solution for handling surplus transfers, receiving, and warehouse management? What about solutions for conducting inventories or managing active assets?


Knowing how to select surplus management software isn’t always easy. Hopefully these tips will help make sure that your decision keeps you satisfied in the short-run and well prepared for long-run possibilities.
