How can you use crowdsourcing to your city\u2019s advantage?<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-98f0d5f elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"98f0d5f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h5 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What problems does crowdsourcing solve?\n<\/h5>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-96d18a5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"96d18a5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-3\"><p>There are a lot of different things you can source from the crowd. It offers guides for tree maintenance and links citizens to urban forestry stewardship groups.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d3673fc elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"d3673fc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h5 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Opinions\n<\/h5>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c7c70f9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c7c70f9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul><li>Polling is perhaps the oldest form of crowdsourcing, and can be a yardstick for the success of your policies and campaigns.<\/li><li>Individual biases are mitigated by aggregating the community\u2019s responses.<\/li><li>Machine learning and language processing advances are enabling automatic analysis and codification of texts including topics on social media.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c13f503 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"c13f503\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h5 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Money\n<\/h5>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-307e738 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"307e738\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul><li>Crowdfunding has grown quickly over the past decade, and is estimated to be a billion-dollar industry in the US alone.<\/li><li><strong>Real Life Example:<\/strong>\u00a0Boston, L.A. and other cities have used crowdfunding to finance public projects to do things like identify and create community \u201cthird spaces\u201d \u2013 those places where you encounter other people and basically hang out (whether in public or in cyberspace).<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-61c6920 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"61c6920\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h5 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Data\n<\/h5>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8585531 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8585531\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul><li>Apps like Waze crowdsource data from users about traffic congestion and potholes.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/tech\/22023\/waze-and-esri-team-up-to-offer-traffic-data-to-city-governments\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">A recent partnership with Esri could make this data available to cities in real time.<\/a><\/li><li>Many cities have rolled out apps and websites to give citizens information about government services and also to allow citizens to submit service requests to fix problems in their community.<\/li><li><strong>Real Life Example:<\/strong>\u00a0Portland, Oregon and some other cities like Atlanta, Austin, Oakland, and Raleigh allow cyclists to log the stress of their rides which can then be aggregated into a map to help other riders find low-stress routes (and potentially to help cities improve the high stress routes).<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9714f4d elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"9714f4d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h5 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What specific steps can my city take?\n<\/h5>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bc97691 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"bc97691\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-9\"><p>Look at your existing city services and decide which would be good candidates for automation. Usually the obvious ones are the information-related services, such as helpdesks. If you are spending a lot of time just answering questions, maybe a website would better serve the public.<\/p><p>Engage your community of volunteers through events and communication. You probably have a lot more people willing to help than you think \u2013 you can harness their time better with modern technology, which could be a great application for social media.<\/p><p>Start a website to post and receive relevant information from the public.<\/p><p>Offer some smart phone apps to the public.
