A Continuous Connection Linking Vehicles, Customers, Staff, Operations and Maintenance: Integrated AssetWorks and Trapeze Solution for Intelligent Transportation Systems

Technology has become a standard component for today’s transits which rely upon sophisticated systems to run nearly every aspect of their operation.
Customers expect reliability and on-time service, easy ways to access schedules and book trips, and quick access to the real-time information that guides their trip.
Drivers need access to real-time information about vehicle health, conditions affecting their route, the status of their vehicle and ways to communicate with dispatchers, passengers on board and the maintenance department.
Planning, Operations, and Scheduling want to stay continuously updated about each of their vehicles and the travelers inside, as well as information specific to passenger safety.
Maintenance relies on detailed information from the vehicle’s onboard computer to optimize all scheduled and unscheduled maintenance and keep vehicles running as safely and effectively as possible.
With so many competing interests, integrated systems are more than a luxury; they are a requirement of today’s transportation agencies. Trapeze provides the best solutions to meet the needs of all the various stakeholders. Together AssetWorks and Trapeze provide a comprehensive solution that bridges the data and communication gaps between all these areas. Built in integration between Trapeze back-office, Trapeze ITS solutions and AssetWorks FleetFocus fleet management system helps to enhance customer experience, increase planning, better react to adverse conditions, lower costs through better resource management and allocation, improve the productivity of the maintenance department and gain a better understanding of all 360 degrees of the operation through comprehensive reporting and analysis tools.
Nearly all modern buses rely on electronic fareboxes, Automated Passenger Counters (APCs), and electronic message signs/enunciation systems for visual and audio communication with passengers. Additionally, each bus is mechanically controlled by an on-board computer that runs and tracks almost every aspect of that bus’ movement, including odometer readings, component diagnostics and defect codes. The Trapeze ITS and FleetFocus integration focuses on bringing all this data together into FleetFocus’ single fleet maintenance database.
The integration between Trapeze ITS and FleetFocus fleet management system focuses on using Real-Time Data from the Vehicle’s Onboard Technology to improve three main areas: Scheduled Maintenance, Unscheduled Maintenance and Business Intelligence (Reporting and Analysis.)
- Scheduled Maintenance – Up-to-date odometer and operational usage data is passed to FleetFocus automatically from ITS, ensuring that each vehicle’s Preventive Maintenance schedule is predicted and adhered to effectively. Additionally, diagnostics data (such as engine temperature or oil pressure histories) is automatically brought into FleetFocus and is made available to technicians without the need to plug in any diagnostic equipment – ensuring that all potential problems are identified and resolved as part of the scheduled maintenance cycle.
- Unscheduled Maintenance – Unforeseen maintenance issues can be the hardest to manage because they cannot be predicted. By linking ITS and FleetFocus, errors and fault codes are communicated directly to maintenance staff and may easily be turned into work action items within the system. Through direct communication with on-board systems, the ITS integration ensures that problems are reported quickly and accurately, resulting in reduced vehicle failure rates and downtime.
- Business Intelligence – With real-time integration between ITS and FleetFocus, all data relevant to an asset’s operational effectiveness is gathered into a single database. From this database, trends in operating parameters and system failures can be used to better-predict failures before they happen. The vast amount of data that is collected in ITS is automatically turned into actionable information.
